There’s a Nigerian proverb that asks, “If you seek something in Sokoto (a place), knowing it’s actually in your sokoto (trousers), would you pause to reconsider?” This analogy mirrors our current pursuit of international education and global learning. The landscape of education has evolved, demanding a shift in how and why we pursue educational opportunities abroad. In this two-part series, I delve into the essence of international education as a process rather than a destination, and how it can be embraced regardless of geographical location.

In a world where technology has revolutionized education, job requirements, and career trajectories, why do we cling to outdated practices? Why do our curricula remain stagnant? Why do we prioritize foreign degrees over the broader concept of international education and global competence?

Before addressing these questions, it’s crucial to grasp the concept of international education and its attainability. Understanding this notion will debunk myths and prompt us to explore how it can be integrated into our educational endeavors.

The Paradigm Shift: Embracing International Education

Traditionally, education is centered around knowledge transmission through conventional teaching methods. However, the dawn of the new millennium ushered in an era defined by technology, globalization, and legal reforms, altering the educational landscape. Today, education extends beyond individual achievement to collaborative learning and global engagement.

Drawing from my experience in international education consulting, I’ve come to understand that education is fundamentally about mindset. While formal education provides valuable knowledge, true enlightenment stems from diverse experiences—such as cultural immersion, language acquisition, and exposure to different perspectives—beyond the confines of traditional classrooms.

The global tours undertaken by top music artists such as Davido, Burna Boy, Tiwa Salvage and others represent a form of global education and cultural export that is essential in today’s learning landscape. It’s imperative that we not only acknowledge but also academically explore the profound impact that African music genres have had on the world over the past decade. This exploration should highlight how these influences have fostered greater inclusion, acceptance of diverse languages, and enhanced global recognition.

Furthermore, I advocate allocating 30% of study abroad (and study in the home country) funds towards participation in exchange programs across multiple universities, engaging in cross-country adventures, and contributing to community projects.

International education transcends geographical boundaries, encompassing various facets of life, from workplaces to social media platforms. For Nigerians, this signifies an opportunity to document and showcase our unique realities and adapt to evolving global dynamics, especially collaborative whether at home or abroad.

I believe our young children should be educated through the imprints left in our sands, the rhythmic swash of ocean waves, the warmth of the sun’s rays, the tribal marks etched on our faces, and the intricacies of our DNA, rather than being confined to outdated texts written decades ago. If only we recognized the vast world awaiting our exploration.

Contrary to popular belief, international education goes beyond mere student migration and institutional exchanges. It encompasses qualitative aspects, emphasizing the content and impact of educational programs on individuals and societies.

As parents and guardians, it’s imperative to discern the type of education that aligns with our children’s needs and aspirations in this ever-changing world. Are we nurturing individuals equipped to thrive in a globalized society?

In the pursuit of international education, let us not merely seek degrees but embrace a holistic approach that fosters cross-cultural understanding, adaptability, and a mindset geared towards global citizenship.
